Work Breakdown Structure Tools

All Gantt charting tools support a hierarchical representation of the activities in your plan and, consequently, a text-based view of the WBS. Some tools (e.g. ProjectLibre) also present the WBS graphically.

Text editors, outliners, mind mappers, and generic drawing tools can also be used, with limitations.

Some applications you might want to try include:

  • LibreOffice. An open-source alternative to MS Office.
Both the word processor and the drawing application can be used to draw a WBS.
The drawing application supports connectors to link elements of the WBS. If using the word processor, a hierarchical numbered list can get the job done properly.
  • Dia. An open-source diagramming application (alternative to Visio). The drawing application supports connectors to link elements of the WBS.
  • Org-Mode. Major mode for editing outlines in Emacs, a (or, better, the) text editor.
Org-mode simplifies the management of outlines and hierarhical structures. Output in different formats.
  • Mindmup. An on-line mind-mapping tool.
